Here I am, getting on in my years, but still spry and clear-minded, doing this thing I never thought I'd be doing. I'm writing a novel. A trilogy, actually. I've always been a creative. I've been writing poetry and song lyrics since before I became an adult. Played guitar. Sang. I've been an artist since I was a small child. Even had private art instruction as a kid. Joined the Army to pay for my art school. But being an author was not something I'd really entertained until a few years ago. Or was there a spark somewhere in my past and I'd simply forgotten?

See, as we get older we sometimes forget things. Sometimes these are significant things. As I was winding down my writing session tonight, I remembered something very significant. Been telling myself for years now the last time I did any creative writing, as in storytelling, was when I was in high school. Had forgotten a period while I was stationed in Wildflecken, Germany serving as an MP in the US Army. Spent many hours in a guard shack on a hawk missile tactical site on guard duty.

One of my Army buddies and I used to work on this story together. There was no outline or plan. We'd just take turns writing parts in a spiral bound notebook. It was almost like a prolonged improv session. Where an actor plays out part of a scene and the other actor has to continue with the scene and they're just making it up as they go along. He'd write a few pages, hand it off to me and then I'd write a few pages and hand it back. On and on it went for weeks until we finished it.

Sure we had vastly different writing styles. I don't really think I had much of a 

 if I'm being honest. Still it was a lot of fun and extremely creative. Don't know whatever happened to that manuscript. With some serious editing and rewrites it would make for a heck of an action story, ending in an apocalyptic scenario. Oh well.

But yeah, I'd forgotten all about that until tonight. Don't know what made me think of it, but it was nice to realize I had done some of this before. Of course back then, I had no visions of becoming a published author. In those days, it was just a way to kill time sitting in a guard shack for many hours. If I wasn't listening to music on my jam box, writing lyrics or poetry, drawing pictures or smokin'-n-jokin' with some of the other soldiers, I was writing that wild story. Good times.
